Japanese garden

Want to create your own Japanese or Zen garden?

The Japanese garden (日本庭園Nihon teien?) is derived from the ancient Japanese tradition. In Japan, garden design is a art important and respected. The Japanese garden seeks to interpret and idealize nature. Some of the most famous gardens in the West as well as in Japan are dry gardens or "Zen gardens", composed of rocks, moss and gravel.

The traditional classification of Japanese gardens groups gardens into three main categories:

  • shizen fūkeishikithe gardens that represent nature in miniature
  • karesansuithe dry gardens, strongly inspired by Buddhism zen and intended for meditation. They use a more abstract representation, where sand or gravel represents the sea, and rocks.
  • chaniwaTea gardens, including landscaped paths.
